Tried & True (1999)
I was playing through some old songs of mine from previous albums and thought I’d change some of them up a bit. It kind of made me sad to sing some of these for some reason. Maybe just because I hadn’t played them in years and the lyrics talk of a time that is long gone (such as “Time Away” from Still Searchin’ (1997)). Below is a MP3 of Words of Love (acoustic version). I wrote this song in 1997 and it was on our Tried & True (1999) album.
At the time I was giving a lot of guitar lessons. My one student brought his Beatles book and wanted to learn a bunch of their songs. On the back cover there must have been over 100 Beatles song titles. As I read through them I got an idea to write a song using only Beatles song titles. Shortly thereafter “Words of Love” was penned. It got some airplay on local “homegrown” stations. I like the energy of the original version. The Tried & True CD was just a raw album. We had no money and did the best we could with it. A local DJ trashed the song during one of his shows…. then he played it.
The original is VERY different than this new acoustic version. I’ll post both. For the new acoustic version I played it live and kept it as it was captured on disc. I did this for a few reasons but mainly because I thought it represented me well. Not perfect but sincere. I hope you enjoy it.

One of the first things you may notice about me when you meet me is that I am a “no excuses” kind of guy. The older, and hopefully wiser, I get I’m finding that issues or problems we face are not as big as they appear. We get so caught up in the details that we lose focus of what the problem really is. I have used this philosophy most of my life. I make no excuses. “I don’t have time”, “I can’t afford it”, or “I’m not talented enough” have never been a part of my vocabulary. I love to multitask and I love variety. That is probably why I wear so many hats. View Full Article »

Today I had the opportunity to play a charity event. Well, not really a charity event but an outreach that a local Christian bookstore organized. The hope was to reach out to the kids “just hanging out” in the community, keep them out of trouble and share the gospel message with them. It is always so hard to get people to come out for these types of events. Most of the time I’m willing to perform even though I know the pay will be zero, there’s a good chance that no one will show up to the event and it’s a bunch of work. View Full Article »

I was lucky enough to have Ted sit in on a session yesterday and let me tell you… he ripped the bass apart. He whipped out 2 songs quickly and with excellent taste. Ted’s input on this new CD is quite refreshing for me. Thanks Ted and glad to have you on this project!
