Tried & True (1999)

I was playing through some old songs of mine from previous albums and thought I’d change some of them up a bit. It kind of made me sad to sing some of these for some reason. Maybe just because I hadn’t played them in years and the lyrics talk of a time that is long gone (such as “Time Away” from Still Searchin’ (1997)). Below is a MP3 of Words of Love (acoustic version). I wrote this song in 1997 and it was on our Tried & True (1999) album.

At the time I was giving a lot of guitar lessons. My one student brought his Beatles book and wanted to learn a bunch of their songs. On the back cover there must have been over 100 Beatles song titles. As I read through them I got an idea to write a song using only Beatles song titles. Shortly thereafter “Words of Love” was penned. It got some airplay on local “homegrown” stations. I like the energy of the original version. The Tried & True CD was just a raw album. We had no money and did the best we could with it. A local DJ trashed the song during one of his shows…. then he played it.

The original is VERY different than this new acoustic version. I’ll post both. For the new acoustic version I played it live and kept it as it was captured on disc. I did this for a few reasons but mainly because I thought it represented me well. Not perfect but sincere. I hope you enjoy it.
